Labor of Love

Each spring since the early 2000s, Sarasota County's Master Gardener Volunteers have launched into work on an endeavor close to their hearts: the group's annual plant sale.

They begin growing plants for the fall fundraiser in early spring, collecting cuttings and propagating plants from their gardens. Each week, you will find the volunteers nurturing the plants, working through the heat of summer and fall, to be sure you can find that special, right plant for the right place in your landscape.

Master Gardener Volunteers work in preparation for the group's annual plant saleThat effort is at the core of the program. With a mission to provide research-based horticultural information and training, Master Gardener Volunteers aim to be the most-trusted resource for horticultural education in Florida.

These dedicated volunteers typically gather more than 300 varieties of plants, and raise approximately 2,500 plants for the sale. Many local residents also donated plants to support this effort.

But it doesn't stop there. You're sure to run into questions, whether it’s about what will grow in our area, when and how much to water, or just finding that "special, right plant" for your place. Don't worry; just find the nearest Master Gardener Volunteer (or Extension staff member). They love to help.
