UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension
Sustainable Agriculture Program Area
The sustainable agriculture program focuses on providing education and demonstrations that promote the ecological use of resources and to develop direct marketing opportunities for Sarasota County's agricultural producers. This information is based on the best management practices for sustainable agricultural production that supports producers to achieve economic viability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. The Program also provides information to Sarasota County residents on agricultural awareness and local food systems.
Interested in learning more about sustainable agriculture? Well now there's a free online, short course for your use that is provided by the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. This source of information covers the core concepts and gives a basic understanding of sustainable agriculture and some of the 'systems' approaches associated with it. If you are a farmer, it's designed for you, whether you're a beginning farmer, or an experienced agricultural producer interested in transitioning to more sustainable practices. If you are a consumer or part of the allied industries, it will describe its goals and its relevance to your local food system, i.e., from farm to plate.
